While we are looking forward to warmer, sunnier days and greener scenery, most of us dread dealing with the inevitable insects that are certain to follow. Instead of reaching for chemical-laden repellents, why not turn to nature’s own defense system? Your kitchen might already be stocked with the best natural bug repellents, and if not, they’re just a few clicks away. Here are some tried-and-true spices to keep those unwelcome guests at bay!
Basil: The Bug-Blocking Herb You Need
Did you know the legendary pesto ingredient offers a natural defense against flies? Both fresh basil plants and dried basil can act as effective deterrents. For dried basil, simply fill a breathable pouch, such as a cotton handkerchief or a thin sock, with a few spoonfuls and place it near entry points like doors and windows. To keep it fresh, give the pouch a little squeeze every now and then to release its aromatic oils and replace the dried basil regularly.

Cinnamon: Spicy Pest Control
We love the cozy, comforting scent of cinnamon, but ants, moths, and silverfish? Not so much. A sprinkle of cinnamon powder in your cabinets and under the sink can work wonders in keeping these pests at bay. Sprinkle cinnamon powder or strategically place cinnamon sticks in cabinets and under sinks to create a natural barrier.
Cloves: Small but Mighty Against Insects
The strong, pungent aroma of cloves is particularly effective against moths and flies. Fill small mesh bags with crushed cloves and position them near windows and doors to discourage these flying insects from entering your home. Planning an outdoor picnic? Keep a few small bags of crushed cloves a handy to help keep ants from crashing your meal.
We all appreciate the role insects play in our ecosystem, but that doesn’t mean they need to be our roommates! Keep these culinary heroes stocked in your pantry to politely encourage bugs to enjoy their lives outside your home.
