“If you don’t know where you’ve come from, you don’t know where you’re going.” This sentiment perfectly captures the essence of Penn Herb Company, which has been a cornerstone of natural remedies here in Philadelphia since 1924. As we celebrate our 100th anniversary, we reflect with immense gratitude and sincere appreciation for our dedicated team members, partners, and loyal customers who have supported us throughout the years.
We are proud to offer the finest in essential oils, premium vitamins, homeopathic preparations, and unique natural remedies from around the world. But our journey to this point is rich with history and hard work. Here’s a look back at the key milestones in our family’s legacy and the evolution of our company (see the full slideshow presentation).
Get To Know: Our Company Roots
Founded in 1924 by Dr. Konstanty Kalkosinski, a Naturopathic physician, Penn Herb Company started on West Girard Avenue, Philadelphia. Dr. Kalkosinski developed unique herbal formulations to meet the specific needs of his patients (many of Dr. Kalkosinski’s herbal formulas are available today under our brand Nature’s Wonderland).
By 1939, our growing business required more space, prompting a move to 603 North Second Street in the historic Northern Liberties section of Philadelphia, where our retail store is still located today.
The Betz Family Legacy
In 1962, due to advancing age, Dr. Kalkosinski, realized the need for organizational help, and in July of that year he entrusted Penn Herb Company to William Betz Sr. and his wife, Jane Betz. Jane’s meticulous work in the early 70s, manually typing out a catalog of our products, laid the foundation for our mail-order service.
In the mid-1990s, we developed one of the first websites dedicated to herbal and natural remedies. Today, although there are many websites offering herbs, often you cannot be sure of whom you are dealing with – and the reputation of the company. Be assured that when you order from us, you will receive the same high quality herbs, spices and natural remedies our customers have trusted since 1924.
Penn Herb: A New Era
The company continued to grow and with all this expansion going on, we were running out of room once again…so the decision was made. Tear down the old store and build a brand new one! The Penn Herb Company Flagship Store opened its doors in September 2015, marking a new chapter in our history.
Fast forward to June 8, 2024, when we celebrated our centennial anniversary. It was a significant milestone filled with joy and reflection (see pics below, including my mom and family matriarch, Jane Betz cutting the cake).
