Herbal Travel Essentials
In an earlier blog post, I mentioned what many know to be a must-have:
- Ginger – In any form, capsules, chews, teas, or syrup – Ginger is the trusty, herbal remedy to always have on hand for any kind of motion sickness. And best of all, the spicy root acts as a digestive aid and joint comfort remedy too!
- Oregano Oil – If I had to pick just one remedy, this would be it. The benefits of this ancient Greek remedy are likened to those of Echinacea, Tea Tree Oil, Goldenseal, and Grapefruit Seed Extract combined! Let me just say up front, yes, the taste is not pleasant, but what it can do is impressive. Use Oregano Oil internally for immediate immune support, sinus, ear, and urinary tract imbalances; intestinal cleansing (especially if the local water is sketchy). Apply topically for skin, gum, and nail care.
- Arnica – Well, technically, not the purely herbal form, but homeopathic preparations. Whether it’s the pellets or a topical ointment (highly recommend both because life happens even on vacation), Arnica is the most popular remedy for falls, bumps, bruises, and swelling from minor injuries.
Bonus: The pellets are super travel-friendly, as they can be taken without food or water. - Aloe Gel – Beach-bound? Don’t forget the Aloe. This soothing gel is a lifesaver for sunburns and skin irritations.
- Chamomile – This surprising choice made sense for many reasons. The relaxing herb is just what’s needed to calm down from the excitement or over-stimulation of travel. Chamomile can help you get a good night’s rest (especially if you have difficulty falling asleep in unfamiliar locations, i.e., the unfamiliar Airbnb bed), and it’s gentle enough for the kiddos when (not if) they get an upset stomach from overeating candy and junk foods.
